PROCESS EQUIPMENT – CENTRIFUGAL COMPRESSOR

DESCRIPTION

Process Plants consist of many process equipment and inter-related process systems. It is a norm that staffs operating the plant are expected to know the functionality of the general process equipment. Knowledge about process equipment theory, its functionality and design come from various sources, however some of the sources may not provide the right basics that are true theoretically and practically. Many times newcomers are not trained with correct knowledge and practice, thus leading to poor understanding of process equipment in-depth working knowledge, design and operating limits. This leads to mal-operation or poor maintenance of the equipment and at times very time consuming troubleshooting without being able to address the underlying root cause.
 
Centrifugal Compressors are used commonly in most process where gaseous fluids need to be transported within process and also for pressure related processes. Centrifugal Compressors come in various sizes and models but the fundamentals that drive the process of compression are the same. Therefore it is important that those who work with such equipment have basic understanding of the compression process and also good working knowledge of the equipment. Regardless of years of plant operating experience, it is not a surprise to know that most operators and engineers do not have good grasp of the equipment and how the selection and design considerations are made during compressor selection for process operation. This training provides both fundamental knowledge about Centrifugal Compressors, and at the same time shows how to monitor effectively performance of compressors with in-house developed simple Excel spreadsheet. Additionally the issues and limitations related to compressor operation are discussed as part of the equipment safe operation.
